After reading Chapter 10 of the course textbook by Cohen & Spenciner (2015), and watching the video, Assessing General Achievement and Reading Ability, contemplate the four approaches to the assessment of student achievement that the authors identified below:
- Curriculum-based assessment
- Criterion-referenced assessment
- Alternative forms of assessment, such as systematic observations, anecdotal records, interviews with family members and the students themselves, samples of students’ work, digital recordings, online media, performances, portfolios, and exhibitions
- Standardized tests, which are administered to individuals or groups
In separate paragraphs, respond to each of the following:
- Enumerate, define, and state at least three examples of each of the four approaches the authors identified.
- Select one of the four approaches and describe an appropriate situation in which you would administer the assessment to determine a student’s achievement. Be sure to describe the student’s specific achievement area that you are assessing and explicit steps as to how you would do so. Include a discussion of both the pros and cons of your chosen assessment approach.
