Purpose

Per APA guidelines, Introduction & Literature Review should explain the research problem that will be investigated in the paper. It should clearly and concisely state the significance of the study and provide a review of relevant literature to support the rationale for the proposed research study. Your research proposal will begin with an Introduction & Literature Review.

Instructions

As you learned in Module 1, there are primary sources (e.g., primary research studies) and secondary sources (e.g., summaries of primary studies, literature reviews, meta-analyses). Some secondary sources (e.g., published systematic literature Review) can be a great way to learn what we already know about the topic. But make sure to use mostly primary sources (original research studies on your topic) to justify the need for your research proposal. Your Introduction and Literature Review should follow these guidelines:

  1. Should be 3-4 pages long
  2. Should open with an interesting “hook” (e.g., powerful quote, striking facts or statistics, anecdote or scenario, etc.)
  3. Provides a clear and concise introduction to the research topic
    • Clearly state the research problem
      1. g., A significant proportion of children are involved in bullying across their school years. Children who are bullied report a range of problems, including anxiety and depression (Nansel et al., 2001), low self-esteem (Egan & Perry, 2008), reduced academic performance (Juvonen et al., 2010), and school absenteeism (Eisenberg et al., 2012).

(adapted from Galvan, 2013)

  • Justify why the topic review is important
    1. National educational data proves that minority students are much more likely than white students to be enrolled in low-track mathematics courses by the 10th grade (Kelly, 2009). Several research studies emphasized that Black students are found disproportionately in lower-ability groups and academic courses as early as the first grade (Entwisle et al., 2007). Thus, it is important to review the intervention strategies currently used by the teachers to support minority students during the content-based instruction.

(adapted from Galvan, 2013)

  • Highlight the significance of the study for current research, policy, practice, or action

  1. Review (summarize and critique) relevant up-to-date empirical literature to support major premises
    • Provide general overview of what we know and what we don’t know about the topic from previous research – this is where you will review your 5-7 recent empirical research studies. Refer back to Module 2 readings (specifically, Chapter 4 pp. 110-126) for more information on how to prepare and organize the review of relevant literature.

  1. Narrows focus from the larger related literature
    • You should include only those studies that provide a foundation for your research

  1. Organizes the information for the reader (using subheadings if needed)
    • g., If your topic is using video for instruction …
      1. (1st Subheading): Video for Academic Instruction
        1. Supporting point: Video is used successfully for academic instruction for students without disabilities
          1. Evidence, argument, or example
          2. Evidence, argument, or example
          3. Evidence, argument, or example
        2. (2nd Subheading): Video for Students with Autism
          1. Supporting point: video is used successfully for teaching functional, behavioral, and social skills for students with autism
            1. Evidence, argument, or example
            2. Evidence, argument, or example
            3. Evidence, argument, or example and so on …

  1. Explicitly state how your potential research proposal will contribute to knowledge about or understanding of the issue justified by the previous.

  1. Provide important definitions (what do you mean by reading programs; what do you include in YOUR definition of communication devices; what is ABA?).
    • g., “While a variety of definitions of … exist, this paper will use the definition …”
    • g., “Throughout this paper the term … will refer to/will be used to refer to …”

  1. Make sure that the Introduction & Literature Review provide the rationale for the importance of your research study!

Review the suggested sections in the Research Proposal Overview document under Assignments Overview link in the left-side menu. Check your Introduction & Literature Review using the guided questions provided below.

Draft your Introduction & Literature Review (as much as you can) and submit to the instructor for grading and feedback.

Evaluating your own Introduction & Literature Review draft consider the following guided questions:

Yes/No Introduction Components Comments
Research Problem
Yes/No Is the broad research topic and research problem explicitly stated in the Introduction?
Yes/No Are research topic and research problem clear, complete and accurate?
Introduction
Yes/No Does it begin with an interesting “hook”?
Yes/No Is the need for the proposed study justified?
Yes/No Is there an explicit statement about how the study will contribute to the existing current research, policy, practice, and/or action?
Review of Relevant Literature
Yes/No Is the importance of the research problem explained by the evidence from previous research?
Yes/No Is the overview of what we know and don’t know about the research problem from previous primary sources present and explicit?
Yes/No Are all statements supported by references? (especially, be careful about statements like “Previous research shows …”, “Several studies indicated …” – statements like that MUST be followed by multiple references!
Yes/No Is the information about previous research logically organized? (e.g., using subheadings if needed)
Yes/No Are different perspectives on the topic presented? (if applicable)
Yes/No Are major terms defined?
