This module, you are required to post your completed Partial Empirical Article Critique as well as provide meaningful feedback to at least ONEof your classmates.

After learning about the research problem, review of relevant literature, and selecting the participants in an empirical quantitative research study, let’s review the empirical study below. A critique is not a summary of the article. It shows your own evaluation of the major research components. Specifically, in this module, you will analyze the article’s purpose, justification, and some of the research methods.

Following your article review, fill out the table in the Empirical Article Critique Download Empirical Article Critique

and post the completed template to the discussion board.

Purpose

This activity is designed to practice summarizing the article and evaluating some of the major research components. This is your first attempt at empirical research critique. As you learn more about each research method in the next modules, you will learn to conduct a complete research critique in Module 7.

Instructions

After reviewing Module 2 content, read the article and fill out the table below (replace guiding questions with your answers). Save and post the document under the Discussion Board.

Student Name

Citation

(in APA format)

Author1, X. X., & Author2, X. X. (Year). Title of the article with only the first word capitalized. Journal Title Italicized and Capitalized, Vol#(Issue#), page-page. https://doi.org/…
Is this an empirical study? Yes/NO
Briefly Summarize (rephrase in your own words; 1-2 sentences) Critique (so what do you think of it?)
Introduction/ Research Problem

What is the broad research problem? What theoretical and/or practical gaps is this research filling? – as authors describe it! Is the introduction clear, complete, and accurate? Is there value in conducting this study? Do the authors provide justification that this research problem is important?
Review of Relevant Literature Is the review of relevant literature provided? Is it up-to date (considering the publication date)? Is the review of literature based primarily on PRIMARY EMPIRICAL studies? Have these previous studies been summarized and critically reviewed noting the gaps in research? Do the authors explicitly relate previous studies to the problem? Is there a balance of points of view?
Research Purpose & Questions

What is the purpose of this study? What questions are the authors trying to answer? Is the broad purpose statement clear? Do research questions follow from previous literature?
Type of Research Quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods Do the authors explicitly state what research design is used?
Participants

Who participated in the study? Do we know how they were recruited, selected (sampling method), and assigned to conditions? Are participants clearly described? Are participants appropriate for what the authors want to find out? Is there an adequate number of participants? Is the sampling method appropriate?
Independent variable or Intervention What is the intervention used in the experimental group? What is used in the control group? Do the authors provide enough information about what was happening in each group: experimental and control? Can we be sure the conditions were comparable? How do we know?
Dependent variables or Measures

What do the authors measure to answer the research questions? Do the authors explicitly describe each measure?
Procedures

What are the step-by-step procedures for collecting the data in each group? Are sufficient details provided about the procedures so that the study can be replicated? Would you be able to repeat the study based on the information provided by authors?
So what? Your Overall thoughts

What are the major results in this study? What are the implications of these results related to the identified problem/gap? How clearly are the results presented? Are the results presented objectively without any interpretation by the authors? How would you improve this study?
