ESSAY 3 ASSIGNMENT CREATING THE APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY ARGUMENT

ORDER NOW

The call for change in a business setting is to ask ourselves and others to have the courage to do
things differently. When change happens, leadership doesn’t always have everyone’s best
interests in mind because they want what is best for the company’s bottom line. Of course, this
isn’t a truism for all companies, and each group has its own definition of what “success” means.
However, change doesn’t ‘just happen.” People make it happen, either by design or by letting
things naturally unfold. The latter can cause unexpected and unwanted consequences.
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a way to design intentional change by seeing what’s needed, but
also by seeing what has worked well. Everyone in the group has a voice in AI.

THE FIVE PARTS TO APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY
There are 5 parts to AI and your Essay 3 assignment should follow those 5 parts. In your
drafts, label each part.
Part 1: Definition—What is the focus of your inquiry? (What problem or area of your field do
you want to focus on?) This part you will establish on your own. Your initial Statement on
Planned Research for Essay 3 can help you here.
Parts 2-5 will require you to do research by interviewing someone in your area of
interest and by using the library portal on the BSU website.
Part 2: Discovery—What gives life to your group? What do you want to focus on? What are the
best things about it?
Part 3: Dream—How can your idea improve your group? What could make it better and so,
make the world a better place? What do you envision? This part will also require research
Part 4: Design—What is the ideal situation for your group? What should be in place? What
steps should be taken to achieve the dream?
Part 5: Destiny—How will the realization of your dream be sustained over time? What would
be necessary to maintain this positive change?

Here are some questions to research and brainstorm about your project. Even if you do not use
all of the answers to these questions in your paper, you should still know the answers to them.
How does your group define “success”?
What is a major change that has taken place in your group in the last five years?
How were those changes managed?
Did those changes have positive or negative effects?
What are your group’s greatest strengths?
THE FIVE PRINCIPLES OF APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY
Read the following article “Appreciative Inquiry” that defines AI more thoroughly:

Appreciative Inquiry

You will learn from the above article that there are also 5 principles to AI. Do not confuse
them with the 5 parts of doing an Appreciative Inquiry.

STEPS TO TAKE
You must first submit a 1-page Statement on Planned Research. This statement will layout the
topic and three questions about the topic you want to study. See the examples in the module.
It will also layout why you are interested in studying the topic and what you expect to learn
through this analysis. The topic must be approved by your instructor.
The second activity is to create an Annotated Bibliography of at least 6 sources. The sources
can be changed in the final paper, but the annotated bibliography that you submit will be a
graded assignment separate from your essay assignment. The annotated bibliography must be
presented in MLA style. Use the OWL Purdue MLA citation generator to help you.

The third activity is to draft your AI argument. This rough draft is to be reviewed by
Smarthinking and a Writing Center tutor so you will need to plan your time and not
procrastinate.
4
The fourth activity is to revise your essay into a polished final draft using what you learned in
the Writing Center and Smarthinking.
The fifth and final activity is to write a Reflection Memo that details what you revised and
didn’t revise and reasons that you made those choices. Your memo will not be graded for
grammar, but you should try to answer as specifically and clearly as possible. The memo should
explicitly answer these four questions:
• What did you understand about the changes asked for in your essay by your
reviewers? Be specific.
• What changes did you make during the revision process and why?
• What changes did you not make and why not?
• What did you learn about the research process and how will you use it in the next
assignment?
Deliverables: 1) Statement on Planned Research, 2) Annotated Bibliography, 3) Rough Draft 4)
Final Draft, and 5) Reflection Memo. Submit the final draft and the memo together as one
Word document.
