In this case study, you will consider writing a midwifery response to a case of your choice involving a woman or gender-diverse person impacted by perinatal mental health challenges diagnosed or undiagnosed.

Your case study should address the following, with clear links to the chosen scenario:

  • A summary of the issue presented in the scenario and its implications for the perinatal mental health and well-being of the woman or gender-diverse person and/or her/their infant/fetus, and her/their family.
  • A discussion with rationale of the midwifery skills and assessments you may use while caring for this woman or gender-diverse person. This discussion should include references to the theories learned in class.
  • A conclusion reflecting on how this case study’s response might impact your future practice.

This assessment should demonstrate appropriate academic integrity principles required for academic writing and referencing (10 – 15 references).

Choose this as the Case study:

A first-time mother presented to breastfeeding center, very distressed, as she was apparently “not making enough milk” for her baby.
She had a very traumatic birth experience. Initially, she was at low risk and was accepted into the family birth center at King Edwards memorial hospital. She was at a low risk throughout the pregnancy, but at the very last minute she had to undergo NELUSCS, which was something not in her birth plan. She went to see a psych med but the doc there said, “at least both you and your baby are alive”. This statement made her even more invalidated and distressed. She is also a midwife herself. She was a paramedic prior to becoming a midwife. Being a health professional herself, she wants to explore more for her well-being, but will never go back to that particular psych med

Keeping this background in mind, make up a perinatal mental health situation this woman would have gone through. Then, answer the following.

  • How can midwives provide holistic, trauma-informed, and empathetic care to support a first-time mother — who is also a healthcare professional — experiencing perinatal mental health challenges following unplanned NELUSCS and breastfeeding difficulties, while addressing feelings of distress and invalidation from her healthcare experiences?
