You should begin working on the Stand-Alone Project early in the course. Each assignment provides a benchmark for completing the Stand-Alone Project in a timely manner while working through the course. You will find this information in the “Stand-Alone Project Benchmark” section of each assignment.

The Stand-Alone Project is comprised of eight (8) parts. (200 points) (A 5-page, double-spaced response is required for the combination of parts A through H)

You are the newly hired HR Director of Pioneer International, which specializes in farm equipment. Pioneer is located in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, and has distribution sites in several small Nebraska cities. Pioneer has about 500 employees.

As luck would have it, you received an invitation to the company’s annual managerial retreat, which is devoted primarily to strategic planning. This is the first company to invite the HR Director. There is a great deal of skepticism from the other directors: What contribution can human resources provide? You are aware that in smaller companies, HR can play a more substantial role in the strategic development process, and you are determined to prove the value of the HR department in the strategic development process and define a role for yourself at the retreat and on an ongoing basis in the strategic management of the organization.

Each director must write out some thoughts regarding Pioneer’s corporate strategy prior to the retreat. To demonstrate your knowledge of the strategic process, you are going to research the company and the industry and develop a series of reports to present at the retreat.

This project will require you to put yourself in the role described above, so you will need to pick a farm equipment company to base your analysis on and gain an understanding of the farm equipment industry. Based on your analysis, prepare the following reports and compile them into one product to include an Executive Summary and a Table of Contents.

Part A Industry Assessment using Porter’s Five Forces Model: This section of your report should include dynamics, industry structure, life cycle, elements crucial to the industry’s survival, and strategic groups.

Part B Level of corporate citizenship: include discussion of being environmentally friendly, trustworthiness, and goodwill. This section would also mention the benefits of their actions.

Part C Direct and Indirect Competition: In this section, use information related to competitive intelligence and the types of competitor information available on the Internet. Research and discuss two (2) competitors of the company that you are profiling and explain why they are competitors.

Part D Internal Strengths and Weaknesses: This should include information related to the VRIO framework.
