INSTRUCTIONS

  1.

MAKE SURE  the form indicated as RA 1 Excel Format Form is used.  A deduction of 30 points is taken if the above form is not used.

Assignment: Using the provided dataset (note worksheet tabs ACTIVE, PROMO, TERM) and files provided, complete the assigned questions. Refer to article “Avoiding Adverse Impact in Employment Practices” for background, definitions, and calculations.

    1. (20 points) Using the ACTIVE worksheet calculate the ACTIVE workforce summarizing each demographic group below by total number & as a percentage to entire workforce. Show your calculations.  A deduction is taken if calculations are not shown.

    a.       Sex (males, females)

    b.      Minority (total non-White ethnicities) & Non-Minority (total White)

    c.       Age (total under 40; and 40 and over)

    2. (30 points) Using the TERM worksheet calculate the rate of selection for each group below (i.e., TERM females / ACTIVE females). Using these rates calculate adverse impact for each of these groups. For negative transactions, i.e. terminations, the lowest rate (most favored) for the group is placed in the numerator position.  Show your calculations Indicate whether Adverse Impact is present (Yes or No). NOTE: If any of the comparison groups do not have a passing rate equal to or greater than 80% of the passing rate of the highest group, then it is generally held that evidence of adverse impact exists for the particular selection procedure. Refer to article “Avoiding Adverse Impact in Employment Practices” for background, definitions, and calculations.

    a.       Sex (males, females)

    b.      Minority vs Non-Minority

    c.       Under 40 vs 40 and Over

    3. (30 points) Using the PROMO worksheet calculate the rate of selection for each group below (i.e., PROMO females / ACTIVE females). Using these rates, calculate adverse impact for each of these groups. The highest rate (most favored) for the group is placed in the denominator position.  Show your calculations Indicate whether Adverse Impact is present (Yes or No). NOTE: If any of the comparison groups do not have a passing rate equal to or greater than 80% of the passing rate of the highest group, then it is generally held that evidence of adverse impact exists for the particular selection procedure). Refer to article “Avoiding Adverse Impact in Employment Practices” for background, definitions, and calculations.

    a.       Sex (males, females)

    b.      Minority vs Non-Minority

    c.       Age (under 40; 40 and over)

    4. (20 points) Summarize your observations based on your adverse impact calculations. Identify what corrective action should be taken to avoid adverse impact.  This should be a professionally written statement of at least 1-page double spaced clearly explaining what your observations are and what actions should be taken using the chapter and exercise material.
